It was a season that began with the first games on Long Island in mid-March, just as the final snowstorm of the winter swept through the region.

It ended this Saturday, June 8 – a day after a tropical storm made its way up the East Coast.

There are many changes in the weather from mid-March to early June.

And in tristate lacrosse, there were many changes as well.

Among the more noteworthy ones: West Islip’s run of nine straight Suffolk County titles ended and Darien was denied a 25th straight trip to the Connecticut state semifinals.

Boys and girls champions were all crowned in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut within a span of about 10 hours.

For a rundown of title-game results and links to coverage on the games, check this overview from LaxLessons.com.

Among the highlights:

  • Ward Melville wrapped up a perfect 22-0 season with a dominating 16-4 win over West Genesee in a matchup of two of the nation’s most established and respected programs in the New York Class A title game. The two teams are now 3-3 in the state-title meetings. It was Ward Melville’s eighth state title, but first since 2000. West Genesee has won 15 state titles since the start of the tournament in 1977.
  • Garden City won its second straight New York Class B state title, but had to beat two teams ranked well ahead of it nationally to do so. The Trojans, rankled No. 17 in the most recent Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse national rankings, defeated No. 14 Jamesville-DeWitt 13-8 in the title game after pulling out a 10-9 win over second-ranked and previously unbeaten Niskayuna in the semifinals.
  • Cazenovia won its third NY Class C crown in the last three years by rallying to defeat Section 1’s Bronxville 13-11 in the final. Bronxville had upset defending state champion Shoreham-Wading River 14-13 in overtime in the semifinals.
  • Wilton, which endured an up-and-down regular season and had to win an outbracket game to make the Connecticut state tournament, wound up winning its second title in the last three years, defeating Joel Barlow 9-4 in the Division M final. Barlow won the Division S state title last year. In Division L, Fairfield Prep scored the last nine goals of the game to pull away for a 14-8 win over upset-minded Staples and win its sixth state title in the last eight years. Weston held on for a 9-8 win over St. Joseph in the Division S final for its third state title in the last five years.
  • Top-seeded Ridge prevailed 8-7 over second-seeded Don Bosco Prep to win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions for the first time.

Capital Challenge to Debut

A new recruiting showcase will be debuting this summer in Albany, the Capital Challenge.

Registration for the event for boys in the classes of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 which will be held at the University of Albany July 19-July 21, is wrapping up now.

Here’s more, including a video overview.
